This course provides a foundation for the development and application of the fundamentals of health information management. The primary focus of this course will be the legal system as it impacts health care and the role that documentation plays in protecting the legal responsibilities of health care providers, facilities and the patient. It will also focus on the management and utilization of data to create meaningful and quality information to assist in making patient care decisions, and help evaluate and plan the evolving face of healthcare in the country. It will include the regulations and professional standards that are required for the management of health information, including health data sources, data collection, use and disclosure and the various systems used to house health information. In addition students will be instructed in the use of abstracted data to formulate resource intensity weights for case weighting systems and the role that quality data/information play in this process.
