ESET 630

Courses ESET 630 and the following ESET 631 are part of the final year of the Energy Systems Technologist program at St. Lawrence College. The final year of the program is intended to emphasize a number of the soft skills such as team work and initiative while reinforcing and building technical skills and ensuring that the student is ready to enter the workforce.

The core concept of the ESET 630 course is for students to undertake a substantial project related to energy systems for an external organization. The external organization will act as the client and the students will be providing a service at a level expected from practitioners in the field. The project is substantial in the sense that it requires significant work to assess client requirements, to gather background data, to research and design possible solutions and to report findings in a professional manner to the client. The student will work with faculty, outside professionals, and their client organization to develop a project deliverable.

Projects will be related to the key areas of the Energy Systems Technology program. Projects will involve the analysis of current energy usage and development of suggestions for improvements in energy efficiency. Some projects may involve the building and/or installation of new or novel energy systems equipment. Projects focused on energy improvement will include an analysis of the financial costs and benefits of the changes proposed.

The 630 and 631 courses run over two semesters, and have two course codes. It is expected that the fall course (ESET630) will be used to organize into teams, identify projects and sponsoring organization, conduct any necessary background research and begin the process of gathering project-specific data. The winter course (ESET631) will continue data gathering and project specific research, development of a planned solution, implementation (if that is appropriate for the project) and reporting to the client.

The course is organized to mimic the structure that students are likely to find in the commercial energy auditing or engineering services business. Students are required to develop project schedules and to report, in weekly meetings, their progress against those schedules. There will be opportunity to review the reasons for variances from planned schedule, in order to prepare better plans in the future.

Because projects in the real world are generally done by teams, this course will emphasize a team approach. Individuals will not (except under extraordinary circumstances) be permitted to undertake a project on their own.
