COMM 004

This course provides students the foundation skills to produce clear technical and professional documents. Students will explore ways of communicating technical information—descriptions, definitions, instructions, etc.—to technical and to client audiences. Students will also gain experience with standard professional documents—letters, memos, short reports—using both print and electronic formats. Emphasis will also be placed on the particular challenges of writing for the web. Through practice in audience analysis, readability, drafting, editing, and revising, students will gain an increased understanding of and facility in the principals of effective technical and professional communication.

Students will work individually and in teams. Assignments and discussions will emphasize effective collaboration, audience analysis, appropriate formats and tone, clarity of communication, and the mechanics of correct syntax, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Attention will also be given to general reading, writing, editing, and collaboration strategies.
