CIVL 10

Pre-Requisites:  CIVL 50 – Soil Mechanics

In most civil engineering applications a critical component of the design process is soil / structure interaction. This course introduces the student to basic design techniques of structures that the civil engineering technologist will encounter. Synthetic materials are used to enhance the properties of soils; they are identified and discussed. Unlike materials discussed to date, soils are often not homogenous. They are strongly influenced by physical conditions. Their behaviour is extremely difficult to predict. As a result field operations and procedures are critical. Instrumentation serves an important role to obtain information before, during, and after the construction phase.
