Flowers, Photography & Photoshop ( 3 day workshop July 25, 26, 27)

Mike LakingPrescott based, international award winning Digital Photo Artisan Mike Laking will lead you through three fun days of learning how to create beautiful art from your photographs. This course is focused more on Photoshop than on photography and beginners are especially encouraged to sign up as sometimes the best photograph is the one that was taken with the automatic setting, the one that Mike uses the most. Mike will talk about how to use Photoshop filters and actions, photograph restoration techniques, printers, paper and inks, and how to find free Photoshop video lessons online. Bring photographs with you that you would like to work on or older photographs that need restoration. We will also be doing photographic assignments that will provide new photographs to work on in Photoshop. While basic level computing skills are required, Photoshop lessons will be conducted on a step-by-step basis. It's easy and will be fun. Check out my website for examples of what you might be able to create from your photographs at www.mikelaking.com. You can also watch the YouTube video called "Flowers, Photography & Photoshop" that I presented in Puerto Vallarta Mexico in January 2011 at http://youtu.be/K37x8BrLrWw . The three day course will be a larger version of the video, but you will see the topics we will cover and what is possible with Photoshop. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Mike Laking was born in a small town in northern Ontario called Burks Falls. He has lived in Labrador, Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Florida, Arizona, and Ohio, but for the past 18 years has called the small Eastern Ontario town of Prescott his home. Mike is a self-taught photographer with over 35 years of experience and while he has always felt that his photographs were technically very good, he knew that there was a spark missing. Four years ago Mike took a course in Photoshop that ignited that spark and fanned it into a roaring flame, propelling him into becoming an international award winning artist.
Using a variety of computer graphic and free-hand drawing techniques, and his original floral photographs, Mike creates unique digital photo art that emulates painting styles reminiscent of Georgia O'Keeffe, his muse, while creating his own inimitable style. Mike`s art has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibits, studio tours, galleries, articles and TV and is included in collections across Canada, the United States and Mexico. He currently works full-time at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, but still manages to be a member of four collectives and participates in several shows and tours each year. Mike has won several regional and international awards including the 2010 International Grand Prize in the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens Photography Exhibition and Contest and the 2010 and 2011 award for Best In Class Orchid Photography at the Ottawa Orchid Society Annual Show. He continues to share the knowledge he has gathered through speaking engagements to photography clubs, art guilds and cooperatives and in seminars in both Canada and Mexico. I am an artist who uses a camera and computer to paint and my passion is flowers. The delicate, fleeting bursts of colours, shapes and sizes are what I strive to catch, so that when the flower is gone, the art remains.

Pottery: Sagger Firing

Alison BrannenLearn ways to achieve stunning colour effects through reduction firing in a "sagger chamber" with electric kilns. Explore techniques to enhance the smoky quality of "colour fuming" and metallic effects. All levels welcome. Bring 10-15 small, very smooth, bone dry pieces and 5-10 leather hard pieces (sculpture, hand built or thrown) ready to polish and decorate with coloured terra sigillata. A fine white porcelain stoneware or earthenware clay works best. Round, convex, nearly closed or bowl forms work well too. Bring hache brushes and decorating tools, copper wire, copper tape, metallic pigments. Silver and gold leaf may be purchased from the course instructor.
