Portraits: Beginner to advanced, and oil or acrylic paint

Joan HolbenThis course is designed for painters who are interested in learning more about the beauty of the human form. You will learn at your own level, with individual help and encouragement. This will highlight the "less is more" technique, and you will go home with three different paintings from the five day course. These three, or more could include children, the elderly, or foreign subjects. There will be some supplies available for sale in the class, including raw canvas, wooden boards, etc. Open acrylic will be provided.

Joan Holben was born in Ottawa. Until 1963, she resided in Eastern Ontario. Joan's world travels eventually took her to India, where she remained for four years and established a technical training program in the state of Punjab. Upon returning to Canada in 1967, she set up her first studio in Eastern Ontario while she attended Queen's University and later Sheridan College, to further her painting career. She set up art programs and taught in elementary and secondary schools until accepting a position of coordinator of Visual Arts at St. Lawrence College in Brockville. Joan also at the time set up functional art programs for teachers at Danforth Technical School in Toronto. She has travelled extensively across Canada, residing for a time in British Columbia, where she established herself as a major new talent. Holben moved to Toronto in 1979 where she operated a studio gallery for two years on Bloor Street. She is currently the Resident Artist for Democo Inc./ Montreal and a Working Artist for Golden, U.S.A. Out of Round

We will take wheel thrown pots and encourage them to become new forms through the use of darting, cutting, and stretching. Let's spend some time exploring asymmetrical pots. We will also look at the types of handles, spouts and lids that these new forms call for. Any and all conversations are welcome whether they be about making a living as a potter, or the more esoteric aspects of being a maker. We will spend a week exploring our creativity and reaching for new personal forms.

My primary pursuit revolves around functional forms, pieces that are lovely to look at, to hold and to use. I believe that it is through the handling and using of pottery that its true beauty is revealed. I design pots with people and their daily rituals in mind. Another important part of my life involves teaching workshops, both in my studio and across the country. I love the teaching, the chance to interact with other potters and the opportunity to learn through my travels I have received many scholarships and awards for my work and I am honoured to be included in private and public collections and museums around the world. I am sure the boundless possibilities of clay will hold me in its magic for the rest of my life.

Painting on Silk for Quilters (3 day workshop July 20, 21, 22)

Irena SchmidtSilk painting is very versatile. You can create paintings as well as create wearable and decorative art. This class will be geared towards quilters who may want to incorporate their art into their quits. You will be able to take home many painted squares which you can use to make a small quilt. Students will work on various representational designs as well as very abstract ones mainly playing with colour effects. The techniques taught will involve silk paints as well as silk dyes, use of resists, batik and shibori. Same techniques can be easily used for any other decorative items. No experience is necessary, it is the colour that will make it happen!!! Some of Irena's previous work can be seen at: http://irenasart.shutterfly.com/pictures/609
All materials supplied by instructor and $ 50.00 payable to instructor on the first day.

My passion is painting on silk. The immediacy and spontaneity that come into play when painting on silk takes me into moments when nothing else matters but art. Teaching is my prime interest. I do exhibit my art frequently, however so far I have not done it for commercial reasons. My life has taken me to many parts of the world. I have taught in several international schools and travelled extensively around the world. Upon returning to Canada in 2003 I started to teach silk painting and I continue to pursue studies in mixed media. I am currently a member of Ottawa Mixed Media Artists. I teach workshops and a more extensive course at the Algonquin College Department of Part Time Studies in Ottawa and 1000 Islands Summer School of the Arts at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario.
