ARTS 6021 Painting: Van Gogh Close Up

Student will be inspired by Van Gogh's close-up vision of nature, his radically composed intimate views of flowers and grass, and learn to paint with his energetic brushwork and vibrant jewel-like chunks of colour. Learn how he composes to create stillness in constant motion; how his colour celebrates both the physical and the timeless. Acrylic and/or oil (no solvent). Beginner to advanced. The cost of the bus trip is not included in the cost of this course. Students opting not to attend the gallery will be provided the opportunity of a studio day.

Van Gogh: Up Close

In Canada only in Ottawa, Van Gogh: Up Close will break new ground in exploring the artist's innovative use of the close-up view. Van Gogh experiments with depth of field and focus, zooms in on a verdant tuft of grass or a single iris, provides shifting perspectives of a farmer's field or the corner of a garden. This exhibition will feature approximately 50 paintings including works that have rarely been shown publicly, as well as a selection of Japanese prints.

Mixed Media Landscape

If you would like a taste of summer in your work, this is the course for you. Participants will combine short outings to take advantage of the wonderful scenery around Brockville through plein air drawing and watercolour or dry media sketches with studio work in a variety of media to create or enhance landscapes. Each day will feature a different demonstration, with watercolour, oil pastel, collage or acrylic and discussions of other materials approaches such as water soluble pencil crayon, chalk pastel etc. In the classroom, participants will use their medium of choice to fully realize their landscape subject from preparatory work and support photography, and colour handouts will be provided.

Thousand Islands Scenes: (3 days July 10,11,12)

Alan BainOf the millions of people who travel through and appreciate our 1000 Islands very few stop to capture their beauty in watercolours. In this indoor course, designed for Beginners and Intermediates, Alan will demonstrate the easy way to capture the St. Lawrence at its best. Cottages, boats underway and in harbour, and always the resplendent forest around all lend themselves to fun and easy painting.

Digital Photography

This is an exciting course which introduces the students to many different aspects of photography. Students will develop an understanding of how colour, shapes, lighting, and framing contribute to make a great photo. Students will be given projects to develop their photography skills and make picture taking more successful and enjoyable. They will take indoor and outdoor photos of abstract shapes, scenic, still life, portraiture, and architectural images. There will be a field trip adventure on the third day for architecture and scenic photography. Students must bring their camera manuals, memory cards, and USB plug. Camera batteries must be fully charged for each class.

Painting skies, trees, and natural water courses in watercolours. (3 days July 11,12,13)

Marc GagnonThis course is for intermediate students. This intense 3 day course will focus on numerous variations of the three major components of landscape painting: skies, trees and water. Painting demonstrations and practical tips will give the students many tools and options for painting these key natural elements successfully and they will also learn how to properly combine them into one painting. Marc L. Gagnon is a full time artist, employing both the acrylic and water colour medium. Marc began painting in 1976 and also practiced architecture for 24 years. In 2000, Marc was elected a member of The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and served on its board of directors for several years. In 2005 he received the Daler Rowney award for his painting "Setting The Table", at the 80th Annual CSPWC Open Waters Juried exhibition. As well as painting full time, Marc also teaches painting, gives painting demonstrations and conducts workshops at various venues throughout Ontario.
His workshops are often sold out and are enthusiastically received.

Pottery for Beginners

Darlene KefferDo you have a yearning to become a potter? This course presents the skills required to get your hands wet and your clothes muddy. Learn the basics of hand building: pinch, coil, slab, and/or, use the 5 days to tackle the sensual process of wheel throwing. Decorative techniques will be demonstrated and all work will be bisque fired. Arrangements can be made for glazing at another time. The studio is well equipped, bright, airy and the atmosphere is casual. So bring your energy and willingness to learn and we'll make some pots.
