Watercolour from the Ground Up: Beginners
If you've always wanted to tackle watercolour but need to know where to start, this course will discuss the medium from brush, pigment and paper onward. Learn foundation mixing skills such as mixing from warm and cool primaries, understanding value, mixing and laying down washes, using negative space through a series of small exercises, guided experimentation and exercises. Every subject tackled in class will include a demonstration by the instructor and colour handouts will be provided for support in your future work at home. The most portable and surprisingly forgivable medium, watercolour is a fantastic way to make more room for painting in your life.
Martha Robinson was born in Toronto and grew up in Port Credit, with summers at Youghall beach in New Brunswick. Her affection for the rural landscape, marmalade cats, birding and domestic animals was firmly established in her youth, and painting became a natural expression of those passions. Along the way Martha has also taught watercolour, acrylic and general art courses at the middle school, college and continuing education levels and is currently teaching throughout Ontario and in New Brunswick. Every November she can be found cowside at the Royal Winter Fair and because of this penchant for painting sheep, cows and the vernacular ruin of the rural landscape she is very much at home in Northumberland where painting from life and live subjects can be freely exercised. She was the poster artist for the 2011 Royal. She currently lives in Port Hope with her husband and a redheaded cat named Henry, and has good friends with sheep.
Experience across a range of media has still left Martha choosing watercolour as a media of choice, and admiration for great location watercolourists like J.S. Sargent and Edward Wesson keeps her inspired and intimidated enough to keep working hard at her craft. She is also currently enjoying painting in oils and acrylics and working with oil pastels.
Since 1993 Martha has exhibited in Canada and the United States in juried shows, small group gallery and independent shows and in public and private galleries. In the summers of 2007 and 2008 Martha was the Artist in the Park in Presqu'ile. Her most recent shows include solo exhibitions at The Lindsay Gallery in 2009, and Scott's Barn Cultural Centre in 2009 and 2010. Recent participation in juried shows includes the Fine Art Showcase at the Royal Winter Fair in 2009 and 2010 and The Peterborough Regional Health Centre Art Show.

Potters and clay artists have used the teapot as a canvas for expression since the beginnings of tea over 500 years ago in China. These teapot shapes have ranged from the historical to the hysterical with Tim's teapots firmly planted in the latter.
This 5 day workshop will allow students to design and build their own unique teapots without a wheel, learning design specific techniques including : slab construction, relief moulding, pinch and coil construction/decoration, slump/hump moulding, spout and handle variations , surface treatments and glazing options. Daily demonstrations and individual step by step approach leavened with Tim's propensity for fun will make this an enjoyable and fulfilling week. All levels welcome!
Since graduating from Sheridan College's School of Design [ceramics] in 1973, Tim has been combining a variety of hand-building techniques with form, function, and a wry sense of humour. Dragons, elephants, giraffes, steamships, spaceships, birds , houses, skyscrapers and snails have all emerged from his workshop; many in the guise of teapots. Tim's work can be found in many major North American collections, private, public and corporate.
