This program is designed to enhance the participant’s skills, knowledge,
and competence in caring for persons suffering from psychopathological
disorders; as well as persons I crisis and populations at risk. Theory
consists of seven units including ethical/legal aspects, communication/
relationships, stress/crisis, psychopathological disorders, psychopharmacology,
treatment modalities, and special issues: child, AIDS, and family violence.

Entrance Requirements
Must submit a photocopy of your Certificate of Competency/Registration
from College of Nurses or equivalent from other provinces/territories
and a current immunization record.

Program Outline
Program is one semester in length. Program intakes are September and January.
Program Structure:
Theory – 120 hours.
Clinical Placement – 120 hours.
- placement is arranged on an individual basis within
your community. Arrangements will be made for writing both mid-term and
final exams within your own community. A Certificate will be issued following
successful completion of the program.

This program is offered by correspondence in a supportive learning environment.
Legal and Ethical Issues within the Practice of Psychiatric Nursing
Focus in on identification and discussion of ethical issues related to
psychiatric nursing and relevant issues and concerns within the Mental
Health Act of Ontario.
Communication as the Foundation of Psychiatric Nursing
Introduces the student to the most significant aspects of communication
with special attention given to the need for self-awareness within the
context of psychiatric nursing.
Stress Adaptation Crisis
Explores the factors that contribute to stress in a person’s life,
strategies for managing stress and adapting to change. Strong emphasis
is placed on the crisis state, behavioural manifestations from those persons
in crisis, and the role of the Registered Practical Nurse in crisis intervention.
Understanding Behaviour, Psychiatric Disorders, and Psychiatric Nursing
Intervention
Includes major views on personality development and behaviour, predisposing
and precipitating factors associated with mental illness; anxiety and
mechanisms for controlling anxiety; the major psychiatric disorders which
emphasize understanding patients and their needs for care.
Psychopharmacology
Presents common drug classifications with emphasis placed on both effects
of drugs and the nursing interventions necessary to keep patients safe
from harm.
Therapeutic Approaches in Psychiatric Care
Compares and contrasts treatment modalities including group structure,
Gestalt therapy, transactional analyses, motivation, psychodrama, self-help
groups, family therapy and electroconvulsive therapy.
Special Topics
Childhood disorders, which include developmental disorders, attention
deficit disorder and anxiety disorders. Discussion of the psychosocial
aspects associated with the person suffering from AIDS. Family violence
explores the different forms of abuse, risk factors and characteristics
of each form of abuse and the implications for the victims of each form
of abuse.
