Early Childhood Education Diploma (Online) – Part Time |
This Distance Education- Online option is organized to meet the needs
of mature students who are working during the day or who are unable to
take the program on a full-time classroom basis and find it more convenient
to participate in individual study. Students can complete this diploma
in 3 or 4 years through the part-time program.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must hold an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or the equivalent, or Statement of Achievement, Level 4, Basic Training for the Skill Development from any college of applied arts and technology; or must qualify for mature applicant status. Conditions of Enrollment In Field Placement: Valid certification of Level C First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR at the student’s expense. A Police Reference Check Required for Placement/Teaching Practice. Up-to-date record of immunization is mandatory.
Mature Applicants: If you are at least 19 years of age and will not have a high school diploma when classes begin, your basis of admission is: mature applicant. You must have all prerequisites listed for your program of choice. If your program does not have prerequisites, then as a minimum you will need to provide proof that you have credits for grade 10 Math and advanced English. Basic and workplace credits are not acceptable preparation for our programs. English is not your first language? All applicants must be fluent enough in English to understand instructors and the technical language used in their subject area. When registering, inquire about English proficiency assessments recognized for admission to our programs.
Students with disabilities who will require accommodations or services must register with our college by contacting our Counseling Department at 613-345-0660 ext. 3235.
Certification: The College will award a diploma upon successful completion of all listed requirements for both part-time and full-time students.
Field Placement: While every effort is made to accommodate individual student’s learning needs, the field placements require more flexibility on the students’ part as we are invited guests of the agencies. The needs of the children and centre are the first priority. There are five (5) placements in the ECE program and these are to be completed in five (5) different childcare facilities.
Essential Requirements for Field Placement:
Field Placement is a physically demanding. It involves the following tasks:
- carrying and lifting children and objects
- responding quickly to emergency situations which may involve assisting with First aid, CPR and/or Epipen
- physically intervening when children are aggressive with materials or other children
- monitor the children's safety, nutrition, health and general wellness
PLEASE NOTE:
There are three (3) general education courses offered through the distance program (GENE 36 – Introduction to Nutrition, GENE 48 – Multiculturalism in Society, and GENE 71 – Violence against Girls and Women) but any general education course can be applied to the three (3) General Education course electives. There are general education courses also available through our OntarioLearn section.

This is the first course introduces students to the field of early childhood care and education. As human services professionals, early childhood educators aspire to standards of care and are guided by a code of ethics which promotes the well-being of children. The course provides an overview of our profession from its historical roots in Europe to the current stage of child care in Canada and the United States. Practical skill training in observing and recording behaviour of children will form part of our work. (30 hours)

EARL23: Children's Media
Everyday in child care centres, children look at books and are read stories. Finger plays, rhymes, tales and picture books form part of the curriculum. The language may be prose or poetry; the illustrations may be painted, collage, or photographed. Videos and television may tell stories or entertain. Each of these media has different ways of reaching children’s imagination and provides language and vocabulary. In this course students will gain an overview of children’s literature and practice a variety of ways to present stories to children from infancy to 12 years. Television, videos and computers will form part of discussion. (30 hours).

Applying theory to practice is an important component of the Early Childhood Education program. Through the prequisite courses, you have gained the theory and practiced the skills necessary to enable you to enter into teaching practice.
This course is the first of the teaching practice experiences in the program. You will be assigned to a licensed childcare or school setting where you will be exposed to the work of an Early Childhood Educator. You will assist staff; observe and record the play and behavior of children; and, interact with children, staff and parents. You will present planned activities that are developmentally appropriate for children. (105 hours)

GENE71 Violence Against Girls and Women (Gen. Ed.)
Violence against women and children, particularly girls, has many unique aspects which distinguish it from the larger category of violence in general. Among these unique aspects is the fact that violence experienced by women and girls often comes from relationships, rather than strangers, and it often occurs in what is believed to be a safe environment such as the home. This course explores the causes and effects of violence against women and girls. Current theories about violence are used to examine the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour that are elements of every violent act, and the social context in which violence takes place. Students will also develop an understanding of the emotional, psychological, and physical effects of violence, and assess community responses to the victim's needs. Topics include: child sexual abuse, domestic violence, workplace harassment, and elder abuse. (45 hrs)
