Personal Support Worker

Program Code 1032

This program is of interest to the individual wanting to enter the health care field as a personal support worker, but who is unable to participate in the College’s full-time Personal Support Worker program. To graduate from the Personal Support Worker program, you must meet the program entrance requirements and successfully complete the theory courses and the clinical experience components of the program listed below. The parttime program format is also of interest to individuals currently working as nurses’ or health care aides but who have no formal training.

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) respect and support the desire of individuals to be healthy and independent according to their own choices and capabilities. The purpose of the support is to assist persons with the tasks of daily living and the range of services provided includes home management, personal care, family responsibilities, and social and recreational activities.

The PSW program was developed as part of the Ontario Government's plan to reform long-term care and support services provided to people living at home and in long-term care facilities and it consolidates and replaces Health Care Aide and Home Support Worker training. Continuing Education has now developed the following upgrading programs to the new Personal Support Worker certificate for individuals who have successfully completed the following levels of training:

  • Health Care Aide program graduates with no community experience
  • Health Care Aide program graduates with relevant community experience
  • Home Support Worker program graduates (Level III)
  • Home Support Level II Statement of Achievement recipients
  • Home Support Level I workers
