St. Lawrence College graduate wins a Premier’s Award

2017-11-29

St. Lawrence College (SLC) graduate, Patrick Hickey is the newest recipient of the Premier’s Award for College Graduates. Hickey won in the category of Health Sciences, which recognizes the significant contributions he has made both close to home and around the world.

The Premier's Awards for College Graduates were held on November 27 in Toronto at the Higher Education Summit, and recognizes college graduates across six categories who have made significant social and economic contributions to society. A total of 118 college graduates were nominated.

Hickey graduated from nursing in 1976 from the Brockville campus, and is an award-winning Clinical Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC), educating the next generation of nurses. As an adventurer, philanthropist, nurse and teacher, the New York Times has described him as "a cross between Florence Nightingale and Indiana Jones." Hickey's achievements include running six medical mission clinics in rural Nicaragua and becoming the first nurse to join the 7 Summits Club by climbing the highest mountains on each continent to raise funds for nursing scholarships. He also went on to complete a Baccalaureate and Masters in Nursing, and a Masters and Doctorate in Public Health.

As a teacher Hickey embraces the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of his students. “I am the one now that is pushing students to challenge themselves and I put myself out there as an example that anyone with passion can get to anywhere in life that they want, whether it be standing on the top of the world, or comforting a dying patient at their bedside,” he said.

“My college education was the base of my triangle. It is the foundation upon which my career and life have been built. The hands-on learning fed my passion for helping others, and gave meaning to the more academic elements of my education. I am truly honored to receive this award.”

“We’re thrilled for Patrick, and all the award recipients,” said SLC president and CEO, Glenn Vollebregt. “The Premier’s Award is not only personally significant it’s also broader recognition that a college education can be the starting point for a rewarding career and personal fulfillment.”
