SLC students shine at the SCMA 2016 Student Case Competition

Students from SLC’s Logistics and Supply Chain Management program participated in the Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA) 2016 Student Case Competition, placing 7th overall of 24 colleges and university teams from across Canada.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management students Molly Brisebois, Eric Gamble, Vivek Paramashiviah, and Nick St. John represented St. Lawrence College at the competition, which took place on February 20, 2016 at McMaster University in Burlington, Ontario.

The Student Case Competition involved a case study based on a real-world situation in which a pet food company looked to expand their market into the US. The teams were given four hours to develop a customs checklist, decide which products and companies to proceed with,  complete a financial implication report, and come up with some risk mitigation strategies. In preparation for the competition, the students met weekly to practice and solve case studies provided by program coordinator Carla Kingston-Floyd.

“The SCMA competition was a great opportunity to put into practice everything we've been studying over the course of the year. Getting to work with real-life supply chain problems makes our program dynamic and engaging,” said SLC team member Molly Brisebois.

The competition was a great experience,” said Eric Gamble. “It showed me what it's like to work under pressure with a team. The program gave us the knowledge we needed to be successful.”

"Indeed it was a unique and very challenging experience stuffed in a pressure cooker situation with a perfectly balanced and enthusiastic team. A great teacher is knowledgeable, warm, accessible, enthusiastic, caring and that is Carla Kingston. Thank you so much for your guidance, support and I’m thankful to college for the opportunity given,” said Vivek Paramashiviah.

"I received a lot of support and time from my instructors at SLC. If you want to do well, you can. I have become good friends with my entire program and it has been fun learning with them throughout the year. I had a great experience at the SCMA competition this year as well. With the knowledge learned and great teamwork, we were all able to contribute to the overall success," said Nick St. John.
