St. Lawrence College, School of Business: Student Success

2014-06-06, 2:19 PM

In St. Lawrence College’s School of Business, our students don’t just sit in a classroom listening to lectures. They are preparing for their future careers by DOING, COMPETING, AND APPLYING their knowledge and skills to REAL-WORLD situations and using their expertise to better their communities and build professional relationships.

Take a look at SPARK, our own Marketing Communications Production House. Spark provides students with real-world experience while they are completing their studies by providing them the opportunity to work with clients, both inside and outside the College. Spark began producing e-learning media services for faculty to provide information for future and current students. The projects will help to supplement and improve the traditional classroom learning experience. The creative team is made up of five students and two staff (SLC graduates) who bring a lot of expertise and guidance to the mix. This highly talented group allows Spark to provide clients with graphic design, copywriting, and video production services. Click here for more information on Spark. For the third year running, our students also hosted a live simulcast at a Kingston theatre of the World Business Forum in New York City with more than 500 local participants. The students had to negotiate with the World Business Forum for the exclusive rights which connects them to the conference administration, as well as local businesses. The forum is an unmatched professional development opportunity for local business professionals and students to hear from the world’s best and brightest business leaders today.

In another amazing opportunity, every year, students from the Advertising and  Marketing Communications program make a pilgrimage to New York City to attend PivotCon, the three-day long social media event, to network with business professionals and share their experiences with the program.

Another unique international experience is available to some of our business programs with the Florida State University and Disney International Program whereby students can earn their diploma from St. Lawrence College, a certificate from Florida State University, and receive academic training experience from Walt Disney Resort near Orlando, Florida. Our Interactive Marketing Communications and Advertising and Marketing Communication students have run the TrendsTalk conference since 2011. TrendsTalk seminars focus on mobile marketing, social media marketing, and interactive web marketing. The conference is made to share information for those who want to hear it – a free education session. These seminars are open to the general public, students, professors, alumni, and all others who wish to attend.

And then, there are our awards…

Our ENACTUS SLC team was crowned National Champion for “Campbell’s Help Hunger Disappear”. The team of 36 people made 10+ projects, impacting 21,493 individuals, generating 82,107 lbs of food, diverting 28,758 lbs of Co2 emissions & 1000kwh, creating $10,566 profit. The team sought out to solve a global problem on a local level.

At both the provincial and national level, our Marketing students are making a name for themselves and the College. At the annual Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC), St. Lawrence College brought home the OCMC cup: the tenth time SLC has placed first competing against 12 other colleges from across Ontario, with the majority of the schools from the Greater Toronto Area.

And not far behind, another team Marketing students owned the podium with a gold medal win at the ninth annual Vanier College BDC Case Challenge in Montreal, beating 32 other teams from colleges across Canada. St. Lawrence College students have excelled in this competition in the past. Over the past five years St. Lawrence teams have placed first overall twice and second overall twice. No other college comes close to that record. The competition was organized by Vanier College and sponsored by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Scotiabank.

Other awards include:

  • Canadian Marketing Association – Student Award national finalist for 2014
  • CGA Ontario Accounting Competition – sent 2 teams this year
  • Western Canadian International Business Competition – Gold Medal for senior team.

What do others have to say?

With more than 30,000 hours of student field placements this year, read these comments from the placement supervisors:

-          "send me 10 more just like him next year"......"best we ever had".

-          In the spirit of strengthening entrepreneurial ties to the community, SLC has brought valuable work experience to the SLC School of Business students.

-          She did a very good job.  If I was looking to hire, she would be the first to call.  Excellent job!"

-          "I found her a pleasure to work with during her tenure.  She adapts quickly and seamlessly.  She is intuitive and creative and will excel in any office environment.  I would high recommend her."

-          “The pioneering spirit of numerous members of the SLC team made this partnership a true success in terms of experiential learning and community engagement, as well as, assisting Swift Eyewear in redefining its “raison d’etre.” ~Joseph Ianni CEO, Swift Eyewear Inc.

And we’re not resting…this year we’ve launched two new graduate certificates that are unique in Ontario – Interactive Marketing Communications and Health Care Administration.
