Peek inside the Artists’ Paintbox Colours at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery

The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery is pleased to present Paintbox Colours by Barb Carr at St. Lawrence College, Brockville campus. Please join us for the exhibition opening on Saturday, September 13, 1-3pm. The exhibition will be on view September 12-October 17, 2014.

Barb Carr’s cheerful collection of collages is something to behold, as her 18 piece collection presents an impression of a colour from the artists’ paintbox. Her work combines the intricacy of mosaic, with the delightful texture and vibrancy of collage. From the overall dimensions, to the repeated pattern of ever decreasing size, each piece in the Paintbox Colours series is based on the design element of the square, creating an interesting juxtaposition between the historic (ancient mosaics) and the modern (digital pixels).

“My inspiration for each piece focuses on one of the colours of my artist paintbox. Small, independent compositions have been created within the whole” said Barb Carr.

Concurrently in the Foyer Gallery, Holly Dean will be exhibiting Mixed Media Musings a collection of original works from altered digital images printed on handmade watercolour paper, to assemblages, to handcrafted Muse Journals. Texture, calligraphy and strong elements of design merge in this fascinating, and truly unique, exhibit.

Also featured in the SLC Library Exhibition Space, emerging artist, and recent St. Lawrence College Visual & Creative Arts-Fine Arts graduate Fraser Radford, presents various works from his series “What a Drag”. Inspired by the work of artist Gerhard Richter, Radford’s colours are carefully combined through a process of ‘dragging’ acrylic paint across canvas; resulting in captivating, multi-dimensional abstractions.
