SLC Graphic Design student wins advertising design competition while on placement

Alex Roberts' design work beat out some of Canada’s top creative talent while he was completing a placement at Station X, an advertising agency with the Astral Media group in Vancouver this past spring. Together with a copywriting partner, they created a new outdoor ad campaign for Astral client, Mercedes Benz.

The contest, called the Carte Blanche Out-of-Home, gives advertising creatives a blank canvas where they can set their wildest ideas free. Astral agencies in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal hold the contest and the winners are determined by votes from within the creative community of ad industry professionals. In addition to the industry recognition, Alex and his partner won a trip to Cannes, France for The Cannes Lions festival of creativity on June 16th, 2013. This is the 60th year of the event which prides itself on being the “world’s greatest celebration of creative communications in all its forms.”

Work placements are a critical part of the Graphic Design course which help students transition into the industry as professional designers, according to Erin Boyce, program coordinator of the Graphic Design program. “It is wonderful for Alex’s peers in the creative community to recognize his design work and talent in such a positive way, and he will certainly be an inspiration for our Graphic Design students. We’re extremely proud of Alex’s accomplishment and know he has a bright future ahead of him.”
