St. Lawrence College students accept the Global Google Online Marketing Challenge

How can Google AdWords help local businesses? That is the question that third-year students in Advertising and Marketing Communications Management program at St. Lawrence College are preparing to answer for their community business clients. Following weeks of preparation by Advertising instructor Cory Firth, the teams are participating in the 2013 Google Online Marketing Challenge. This will be the first time that our students have taken part in this competition.

"Students are competing in the challenge to offer their clients a new source of online advertising exposure,” Firth said. “With $250 in real Google AdWords dollars for three-weeks, students can drive an increased amount of specifically targeted web traffic to their clients’ websites.”

The competition began on February 12, 2013 and each team is in charge of managing a community client campaign for three weeks. The local clients range from Hydrathletics Aquatherapy Clinic and Kingston Punk Productions to Envy Salon. The teams from St. Lawrence College are part of a much larger competition of 200,000 registrations across the globe.

“The level of competition is amazing,” said Firth. "If one of our student groups wins our region, then we have the opportunity to tour the Google head offices in Toronto and meet the Google Canada marketing team.”  According to Google’s contest site, students and professors from almost 100 countries have participated in the past five years. The Advertising program at SLC has at least one grad working in marketing communications at Google Canada.

Because the Google Online Marketing Competition is still relatively new, it’s a great opportunity for the college, according to John Conrad, Associate Dean for the School of Business at St. Lawrence College. “This is the kind of thing that people in that industry are doing day-to-day,” he said. “Completing a three-week campaign for an actual client, with a real budget, provides our students with industry experience that they wouldn't get anywhere else.”
