Modern day muse: new exhibit features art inspired by the car

2013-01-08

BROCKVILLE – St. Lawrence College is pleased to present “Carchitecture”, a solo exhibit by artist Jeff Mann at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery on the Brockville campus from January 11 to February 16, 2013.

“Carchitecture” is a word that Kingston-based artist Jeff Mann uses to describe his recent sculptures and paintings. These diverse artworks have been inspired by discarded car parts and car generated patterns. His work celebrates the incredible beauty and complexity of the shapes and patterns of this found object – the car.

“I am not simply using any found object; I use car parts because I believe the car is the subliminal shaper of our world, and our culture,” explains Jeff.

Big, colourful, and organic best describes his paintings with their strong graphics, sometimes created on industrial fabric. The viewer will see an exceptionally large body of work from this prolific artist whose imagery is both small and large scale. The sculpture is mostly wall hung with some freestanding and suspended pieces.

Jeff will lead a workshop called TREAD ON IT! for St. Lawrence College Visual & Creative Arts – Fine Arts students, who will create their own car-inspired art in the form of printed t-shirts using car tires as printing blocks.
