St. Lawrence College Students Named National Champions for Environmental Initiatives

2012-05-09

St. Lawrence College has been named the 2012 Scotiabank & SIFE Go Green Challenge National Champion by national charitable organization Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) and proud supporter Scotiabank. The national competition took place at the 2012 ACE National Exposition on May 8 in Calgary.

The Scotiabank & SIFE Go Green Challenge is a national competition empowering post-secondary students to develop and deliver projects that teach others viable solutions to relevant environmental issues. The Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team from St. Lawrence College embodied the values of environmental awareness and responsibility to win this challenge by retrofitting the food bank with energy-efficient systems to reduce their carbon footprint and better distribute their food and services. This included the installation of a new, energy-efficient freezer, approval for the installation of solar panels and other cost-benefit options that will help the food bank in both in the short and long term.

“It is clear from the quality of projects submitted at this year’s competition that youth are leading the way toward a greener future in Canada,” said Kaz Flinn, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for Scotiabank. “Initiatives like this one encourage all of us to begin thinking about sustainable solutions that will benefit ourselves, our families and the communities we call home. Scotiabank is proud to once again be supporting SIFE as part of our environmental program, Scotiabank EcoLiving.”

Through their Food Bank Projects, SIFE St. Lawrence impacted 21,144 individuals, provided 175,300 meals and incurred $219,623 in economic impact.

“SIFE St. Lawrence possesses social awareness and a dedication to environmental sustainability, creating positive changes in Canada and the world,” says Amy Harder, ACE President, “ACE is inspired by the ingenuity of these students, who will undoubtedly continue to empower others to become more environmentally responsible.”

The ACE National Exposition has welcomed 1,200 delegates to Calgary, including more than 700 students from more than 50 campuses across the country, academic professionals and over 400 Canadian business leaders. Through competition, recognition and education, the ACE National Exposition is an annual gathering that effectively engages generations of leaders around the shared cause of building a better Canada. The Scotiabank & SIFE Go Green Challenge is one of six competitions held annually during the National Exposition.
