St. Lawrence College students find success at business case competition

2012-02-21
CORNWALL, ON – St. Lawrence College students were awarded a Scotiabank award for their work at the 7th annual Vanier College BDC Case Challenge, which took place in Montreal February 11th – 12th, 2012. The competition involved thirty teams from across Canada.
Mélanie Vézina, Brandon Osborn, and Chantale Léger formed the St. Lawrence College Cornwall campus team, which was one of only nine teams to receive the Scotiabank award. The team was led by coach Michel Pilon, a marketing professor at St. Lawrence College. Students from St. Lawrence College’s Kingston campus also took part in the competition.
“I had an amazing experience at the competition. We were very proud to represent the College, and prove that no matter what school you come from, and how many students attend your school, you can definitely be a contender,” said Chantale Léger, a third-year student in the Business Administration program at St. Lawrence College. “I think that this competition did prove that we can take on anything we put our mind to. I would definitely do something like this again and would recommend other students to also participate.”
Teammate Brandon Osborn echoed this sentiment. “The experience was phenomenal; it really meant a lot to be selected to represent our campus, because the best marketing students in the country were in the competition. I hope that students in the business program will continue our success,” said Osborn, also a third-year student in the Business Administration program.
The team’s Scotiabank Award will be proudly displayed on St. Lawrence College’s Cornwall campus.
“We are all going to take away something from this experience whether it’s new skills, confidence or a sense of accomplishment,” said Mélanie Vézina, a third-year student in the Business Administration – Accounting program. “I feel as though I have the confidence to do better in all of my presentations down the road. I was very glad to participate in this event and would not hesitate to do it again.”
The Vanier College BDC Case Challenge has top students from technical business programs across Canada put their analytical skills and business savvy to the test, creating and pitching a viable marketing plan for a business problem to a panel of judges. The event, supported by the Business Development Bank of Canada, has become the most prestigious national collegiate level case competition.
