"Fiddler on the Roof" comes to the Brockville stage

The St. Lawrence College, Music Theatre Performance program is thrilled to present the world renowned, award winning musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Brockville Arts Centre, with performances on April 14, 15 and 16 at 8 pm, and a matinee on April 17 at 2 pm.

Based on the book by Joseph Stein (based on the short story, Tevye and his Daughters by Sholem Aleichen), with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics from Sheldon Harnick, "Fiddler on the Roof" first opened on Broadway in 1964 and ran for more than 3,000 performances. It held the record for the longest running Broadway musical for almost ten years until "Grease" took over.

Set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, this heartwarming, and heartbreaking story is about of a father of five daughters, trying to maintain his family and Jewish traditions, while outside influences encroach upon their lives.

Featuring the classic songs "If I Were a Rich Man, and "Tradition", "Fiddler on the Roof" was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned four Broadway revivals, a successful 1971 film adaptation, and the show has enjoyed enduring international popularity.

"With this year’s talented crop of musicians and dramatic arts students, the performance is a ‘must see’ event," said Michael Bianchin, Program Coordinator, and Director of the show. "It’s thrilling to be involved in such a classic, and much-loved musical. I know our cast and production team will do it proud."
