SLC Vikings Head Coach, Andrea Blackwell, named to Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame

Andrea Blackwell, Head Coach of the St. Lawrence College Vikings Women’s Basketball team, has been named as one of four inductees into the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame for 2010.

Every two years, Ontario Basketball opens the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame for those with outstanding basketball accomplishments in Ontario. 2010 inductees into the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame were nominated by their peers and voted on by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The categories are athletes, coaches, builders, teams and officials.

Blackwell will enter the Hall of Fame as the lone entry in the 2010 athlete category.

Andrea Blackwell – Athlete
From Calgary and Kingston to Italy and Greece, Blackwell is one of the most accomplished female basketball players in Canadian history. Selected to the junior women’s national team at age 15, and the senior women’s national team at age 16, Blackwell represented Canada for 17 years and competed in four World Championships and two Olympic Games, capturing fourth place at the 1984 Los Angeles games. Blackwell is a three-time Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) All-Canadian and was named the Nan Copp Most Outstanding Player in Canada for the 1983-1984 season. Blackwell led Bishop’s University to back-to-back national championships in 1982-1983 and 1983-1984.

The Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame official induction ceremony and Gala will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Markham. The gala serves as a gathering of the basketball community and provides the opportunity to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the sport both past and present.

Coach Blackwell recently completed her 3rd season at the helm of the St. Lawrence College Vikings. During her tenure the Vikings squad has amassed a record of 27-17. For 2008-2009 Blackwell was named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women’s Basketball coach of the year.
