Questions answered at Open House

2009-11-13

People go back to school for all kinds of reasons. Andrea Mueller came to St. Lawrence college to get back into a career she had left behind when she was raising her children. Now, she is working as a practical nurse at St. Elizabeth Health Care in Ottawa and is a paramedical nurse for Medisys. "My two years in college were great! The teachers were excellent and very patient, teaching us everything we needed to know."

Making that first step to return to college can seem intimidating if you've been away from school for a while. That's why St. Lawrence College offers many different ways to get information. For those who prefer getting information face-to-face, direct from the people who have the answers, St. Lawrence College is offering an Open House Session at each of its three campuses. Staff, students and faculty will be gathering at the Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston campuses to provide one-on-one information, give tours of the labs and services, and answer questions.

Common questions that are directed to the staff during these events often include the cost of going to College, help available for paying one's education, and whether jobs will be there after graduation. All of these questions can be answered on Saturday, November 21, from 9am to 1pm during Open House.

"We chose Saturday morning for our Open House this year to accommodate the largest amount of people," said College recruiter Lou Ann Hamilton. "We're hoping that parents, high school students, counsellors, the young and not-so-young adults looking to further their careers will all come out to talk to us."

What may not be widely known is that some programs also start in January and February. The business programs, for example, start in January and run through the Spring making it possible for those students to start their second year the following Fall. These programs, in addition to the 80+ programs starting in September, will be discussed, with faculty providing detailed information about their specific courses, the costs and materials required. Visitors are sure to leave with a wealth of information.

For those who like written documentation, personal Youbooks are available on-line at www.stlawrencecollege.ca. This information can be mailed or visitors can examine program listings and information right on-line. College Career Guides will be available at the Open House with all the information needed to take that next step towards a college career.
