St. Lawrence College Vikings Defeat Wilfred Laurier University in Pre-season Exhibition Basketball

2009-10-08

In an exciting see-saw battle the St. Lawrence College Vikings downed the visiting Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks 74-73 tonight in a pre-season exhibition match at the SLC Gymnasium.

Both momentum and the lead changed hands frequently throughout the game. At one stage in the first half, Laurier was up by 10 while but the Vikings closed the gap and stayed in the contest. The half-time score was 39-35 in favour of Laurier.

Mid-way through the second half the Vikings went on a tear and established a 10 point spread on the Golden Hawks. Once again the momentum and score shifted as Laurier clawed back and regained the lead of 73-72 with just 18 seconds remaining. 2008 OCAA Rookie of the Year, Ajahmo Clarke of the Vikings stole the ball from the Hawks inbound throw and ran the court for the lay-up with 15 seconds left in the game. From this point the Vikings bore down defensively and shut down Laurier’s last ditch attempt to win the game. Remy Simpson lead the way defensively for SLC.

While happy with the win Head Coach Barry Smith realizes his squad still has much to work on as they near the OCAA regular season. "We were out rebounded 46-29 tonight so we didn’t do particularly well in that area," stated Smith. "We played with great intensity at certain times of the game but didn’t sustain it throughout; I thought we were lucky to be only down by 4 at the half. Our guys need to realize the difference in intensity at the college level – they can’t take a break and need to keep the intensity up for the entire game, not just stretches within it," he added.

Adrian Tomlinson led the scoring for the Vikings with 18 and was followed closely by Saliym Cadogen who poured in 13 in the winning effort. Kale Harrison led the Golden Hawks and all scorers with 20 points.

The Vikings will travel to Durham College next week to participate in the Durham Invitational Tournament and will host the Vikings Invitational here in Kingston the following weekend Oct 23-25. The OCAA home opener for the Vikings is set for November 6th where they play host to Seneca College, tip-off is 8pm.
