2009-03-16

A team of St. Lawrence College students took first and second place in the ACE Canada’s Central competition in Toronto on the weekend.

In its inaugural year, Students in Free Enterprise at St. Lawrence College (SIFE SLC) won an unprecedented first place award and $1500 for its "Financial Literacy" program, and a second place finish and $1000 for its "Entrepreneurship" program. SIFE SLC competed with 16 prominent universities and colleges, including the University of Toronto and George Brown College, for the central region competition. They will now move on to the National competition in May.

"This is the first time a start up team has ever taken home a first place award not to mention a second place award," said

Armin Zohrabi, Manager, Program Development, ACE Canada.

Cameron Heaps, cofounder of Steam Whistle Brewery and "Entrepreneur of the Year" graciously hosted and inspired the winning team with a private tour of the Toronto brewery in celebration of their success at ACE Canada’s Regional Competition.

With support from all levels of St. Lawrence College and community support and sponsorship from Unity Saving, McCoy Bus, St. Lawrence SA, and Sir Gawain’s Fashion, SIFE SLC runs programs which provide money management skills to students, especially the 60 percent of SLC students receiving OSAP. Additionally, programs link Energy Systems students to non-for-profit housing for energy audits providing students with entrepreneurial tools and funded agencies with energy saving options.

"SIFE SLC students are not only making a difference in the Kingston community they are applying skills taught in the classroom while developing the confidence needed to compete in the business world," said Pam Bovey Armstrong, Faculty Advisor SIFE SLC.

The winning team members are: James Vinkle, Andrew Fleck, Michael Graves, Cody Clay, Patrick LaLonde, Darcy Voutt, Spencer Dossett and Wesley Kuo.
