Wind Turbine Technician / Industrial Electrician Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship (Kingston)

This unique program combines a registered Industrial Electrician apprenticeship with a Wind Turbine Technician Ontario College Diploma. Students who enroll in this program will be registered as Industrial Electrician apprentices while attending college and upon graduation students will have to complete the balance of the practical work experience requirements of the apprenticeship program to be eligible for certification as an Industrial Electrician.

This program will give you a comprehensive understanding of power generation, electronics and controls as it relates to wind turbines. In addition you will gain in depth knowledge and hands-on experience in all mechanical and hydraulic aspects as well as become familiar with fiberglass repair techniques. You will receive safety training for working at heights and in confined spaces.

In order to complete this program, you must have no fear of heights and you must be physically fit.

Note: This program provides the complete in–school portion for all levels of the Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship certification program.

Career Highlights
The Wind Power Industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada. The demand for trained and certified Wind Turbine Technicians is also growing rapidly.

As a Wind Turbine Technician you will be at the forefront of a new and growing industry. You will be working with modern technology in a demanding environment. It will be your responsibility to install and carry out scheduled preventative maintenance on large size wind turbines as a member of a maintenance team. This will include performing inspections, taking measurements and providing documentation. You will be called upon to diagnose and repair any fault and as such contribute to the on-going safe operation of the Wind Turbine.

You will be engaged in a career in green energy, contributing in a significant way to improving our environment and providing needed clean electrical power to Canadians.

Ontario College Diploma
Certificate of Qualification (Red Seal) for Industrial Electrician upon completing the work experience requirements of the training standards logbook and successfully passing the Ministry Certificate of Qualification exam.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent with the following prerequisite:
• Grade 12 Math at the C or U level (or MCR3U or MCF3M)

  • Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive an Ontario College Diploma 
  • Students are registered as Apprentices with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities 
  • The College assists students to find a paid co-op work placement for the summer months prior to semester 3 
  • The work experience gained during placement may be validated in the student’s apprenticeship logbook 
  • Upon successful completion of the program students are exempt from any further in-school apprenticeship training 
  • Graduates who complete the skill requirements of the apprenticeship are eligible to take the exam for Certificate of Qualification for Industrial Electrician (Red Seal)

Unique Learning Opportunities
As part of our program, we will provide our students the opportunity to be certified by BZEE, the German wind industry training institute. This internationally recognized certification will ensure wide access to wind turbine technician jobs. We will also be working toward inclusion of training for working on off-shore wind turbines. We will have a classroom on-site at the nearby Wolfe Island Wind farm, one of the largest wind farms in Ontario.
