Child and Youth Worker (Kingston)

There are three ways to achieve a Child & Youth Worker Diploma at St. Lawrence College: six semesters in three years (Kingston Campus); an accelerated two years (Brockville Campus); and a Fast-Track two years (Kingston Campus).

Child and Youth Workers are specialists in facilitating change in children, youth and young adults who are experiencing a range of social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges. Children and youth respond to the impact of change, stress, loss, poverty, violence, abuse and neglect with a range of emotions and behaviours including confusion, anger, withdrawal, aggression, hopelessness, violence, and suicide. Many of the children or youth experience numerous challenges, or have been diagnosed with multiple problems.

Additionally, increasing numbers of these youths are young offenders who are in custody and/or are receiving some therapeutic intervention. Understanding the individual and the unique nature of his/her response is therefore an important first task. Child and Youth Workers (CYWs) are a valuable resource to children, youth and their families in this process. They commit themselves to understanding and interacting in therapeutic relationships with these children, youth, and their families to promote and facilitate positive change.

What others are saying about St. Lawrence College:

“When I graduated from high school I knew that I wanted to work in a small animal clinic as a veterinary assistant, but there were no programs offered in the Maritimes. Through the help of my guidance counsellor, I found SLC. It was exactly what I was looking for. My three years in Kingston and the Animal Care Technology program was a very positive and enjoyable time of my life. ”
