All applicants must be fluent enough in English to understand instructors and the technical language used in their subject area. Following is a list of English proficiency assessments recognized for admission to our programs.(See below for Laurentian University Collaborative programs, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.)

St. Lawrence College ESL Pre-Academic Level Certificate. The required score is 60% except for degree and post-graduate programs which require at least 70%.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum score of 78 on the internet-based test, 213 on the computer-based test is required except for degree and post-graduate programs. TOEFL for degree and post-graduate programs: 83 internet; 220 computer.

IELTS (International English Language Test Service): The required score for this British-based test is 6.0 overall, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each section except for degree and post-graduate programs. IELTS for degree and post-graduate programs: 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.0 in each section.

CAEL (Canadian Adult English Language Assessment): An overall score of 60 is required for admission to our programs. This Canadian test assesses English use for academic purposes and can be taken on fixed testing dates at several locations across Canada and internationally. Visit www.cael.ca for more information.

STEP/EIKEN (Test in Practical English Proficiency): A minimum score of Pre-1 is needed for this Japanese-based test. 

MELAB: A minimum score of 80 is required except for degree and post-graduate programs. MELAB for degree and post-graduate programs: 82.

PTE: Pearson Test of English Language scores of 55 or higher for entrance to certificate and diploma programs and 60 for post graduate, degree and fast track programs

Cambridge English - Test scores of 173 or higher for entrance to certificate and diploma programs and 180 for post graduate, degree and fast track programs

St. Lawrence College has partnerships with a number of English as a Second Language Schools in Canada and recognizes completion of specific programs as demonstration of proficiency for admission to our programs.

 

Current Partner Institutions:

  • Queen’s University School of English – Advanced Level Certificate or higher.
  • English School of Canada (ESC): Successfully complete ESC Level 8 and all modules of the ESC College Transfer Program (CTP) to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements for entry to post-secondary diploma and certificate programs.
  • St. George International College: Successfully complete the University/College Preparation Program (UCPP) for entry to post-secondary degree, diploma and certificate programs.
  • International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC): Successfully complete the Pre-Degree Program for entry to post-secondary degree, diploma and certificate programs.
  • Omnicom School of Languages: Successful completion of “Academic/College Preparation Course”; minimum grade 75%
  • Canadian Language Centre (CLC): Successful completion of “English for Academic Purposes”; minimum grade 70%
  • ILSC Education Group: Successful completion of ILSC’s “Academic Preparation Level Advanced 2” (University Pathway Program); minimum grade 70%
  • Study English in Canada (SEC): Successful completion of English for Academic Preparation Course; minimum band score of 70-80 on final exam

Laurentian University Collaborative programs, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Nursing; students must meet one of the language requirements below in addition of the academic requirement:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (minimum score: 230 computer-based, 570 paper-based, 88 Internet-based)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic)(minimum score: 6.5)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) (minimum score: 80)
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment Test (minimum score: 70, with 60 in writing proficiency)
  • Cambridge English Proficiency (minimum result: 180)
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE) (minimum score: 60)
  • Three years of full time senior-level studies in an English-language secondary school or post-secondary institution (official documents required)
  • St. Lawrence College ESL Pre-Academic certificate with a score of 70% or higher
