All applicants must be fluent enough in English to understand instructors and the technical language used in their subject area. Following is a list of English proficiency assessments recognized for admission to our programs. Test results must be dated within the past two years. (See below for Laurentian University Collaborative programs, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.)

  • St. Lawrence College ESL Pre-Academic Level Certificate. A minimum grade of 60% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum overall grade of 70% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum score of 78 on the internet-based test, or 213 on the computer-based test, is required for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum grade of 83 internet-based test, or 220 on the computer-based text for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs..
  • IELTS (International English Language Test Service): A minimum score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each section, for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each section, for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • CAEL (Canadian Adult English Language Assessment): An overall score of 60 is required for entry to diploma, certificate, degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs. 
  • STEP/EIKEN (Test in Practical English Proficiency): A minimum score of Pre-1 is required for entry to diploma, certificate, degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs. 
  • MELAB: A minimum score of 80 is required except for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 82 for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • PTE: Pearson Test of English Language scores of 55 or higher for entrance to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 60 for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Cambridge English: Test scores of 173 of higher for entrance to diploma and certificate programs; minimum score of 180 for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.

St. Lawrence College has partnerships with a number of English as a Second Language Schools in Canada and recognizes completion of specific programs as demonstration of proficiency for admission to our programs.   • Queen’s University School of English – Advanced Level Certificate or higher.
  • Academie Linguistique International: Level 8 with a minimum grade of 70% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; University College Pathway with a minimum grade of 70% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Canadian College of English Language: Level 140 with a minimum grade of 60% for entry to two-year diploma and certificate programs; Level 145 with a minimum grade of 60% for entry to three-year diploma, degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Canadian Language Centre (CLC): Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes with a minimum grade 70% for entry to diploma and certificate programs.
  • Canadian Language Learning College: University Pathway Program Level 7 with a minimum grade of 75% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; University Pathway Program Level 8 with a minimum grade of 80% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • East Coast School of Languages: University College Pathway 400 with a minimum grade of 70% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; University College Pathway 500 with a minimum grade of 70% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • English School of Canada (ESC): Successfully complete all modules of the University College Transfer Program with a minimum grade of 75% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum grade of 80% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Halifax Language Institute of Canada: English for Academic Purposes Level 6 with a minimum grade of 75% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum grade of 85% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • ILSC Education Group: University Pathway Level Advanced 2 with a minimum grade 70% for entry to degree, diploma, certificate, graduate certificate, and fast-track programs.
  • International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC): Successfully complete University Pathway Program for entry to degree, diploma, certificate, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Quest: Level 8 or 9 with a minimum grade of 75% on the Academic Pathway Exit Test for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum grade of 80% on the Academic Pathway Exit Test for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Royal Canadian Institute of International Studies: English for Academic Purposes program with a minimum grade of 70% overall and a final exam score of 6.0 for entry to diploma and certificate programs; minimum grade of 80% overall and a final exam score of 6.0 for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.
  • Upper Madison College: English for Academic Purposes Level 12 with a minimum grade 70% for entry to degree, diploma, certificate, graduate certificate, and fast-track programs.
  • Western Town College: University Preparation Program Module 3 with a minimum grade of 75% for entry to diploma and certificate programs; University Preparation Program Module 4 with a minimum grade of 75% for entry to degree, graduate certificate and fast-track programs.

Laurentian University Collaborative programs

For Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Nursing students must meet one of the language requirements below in addition of the academic requirement. Test results must be from within the past two years.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (minimum score: 230 computer-based, 570 paper-based, 88 Internet-based)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic)(minimum score: 6.5)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) (minimum score: 80)
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment Test (minimum score: 70, with 60 in writing proficiency)
  • Cambridge English Proficiency (minimum result: 180)
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE) (minimum score: 60)
  • Three years of full time senior-level studies in an English-language secondary school or post-secondary institution (official documents required)
  • St. Lawrence College ESL Pre-Academic certificate with a score of 70% or higher
