This list is meant to provide a brief overview of terms related to sexual and gender diversity.  

Sexual orientation- Refers to the gender of the individuals to whom you are sexually and/or romantically attracted.

Gender Identity- A term referring to how you think about yourself in terms of gender regardless of biological sex assigned at birth.

Lesbian- An individual who identifies as a woman and who is primarily or exclusively attracted, sexually and/or romantically, to others who identify as women.

Gay- An individual who identifies as a man and who is primarily or exclusively attracted, sexually and/or romantically, to others who identify as men

Bisexual- An individual who is attracted, sexually and/or romantically, to both those who identify as men and those who identify as women.

Transgender (Trans)- A person whose sense of personal identity does not correspond with the gender assigned to them at birth.

Transexual- A person who does not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth and who plans to have/in the process of/or has undergone sex reassignment/realignment surgery/ hormone therapy.

Cisgender- A person whose assigned sex matches their gender identity.

Two-Spirit- Two-spirit is a term adopted by some North American Aboriginal peoples to refer to those who embody both a male and female spirit.  Can refer to orientation, identity, expression.

Gender Queer- A person whose gender identity is neither male nor female but is undefined and possibly in flux (e.g. Gender Fluid)

Pansexual-  A person who experiences sexual and/or romantic attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions, not just people who fit into the standard gender binary (i.e. men and women). 

Cross-Dresser- A cross-dresser identifies with one gender, but wears the clothing generally associated by the culture with the other gender. 

Intersex- Those who are born with mixed biological male and female sex characteristics.

Queer-Commonly used to define lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, and other people and institutions on the margins of mainstream culture in terms of sexual orientation and gender.

Allies-Those who are not a part of the LGBTQ community but who support the rights and actions of those within in it.

Homo/Trans/Bi/phobia- Discrimination against someone who identifies as, or is perceived to be, homosexual, transgender or bisexual.

Cisgender- A person who identifies as the gender/sex they were assigned at birth.

Gender Queer- A person whose gender identity is neither solely a man or a woman but is in flux

Asexual-  person who is not interested or does not desire sexual activity, in or out of a relationship. Not the same as celibacy.
